Sunrise

Sun shining through trees and mist. After the rains of yesterday, we still had mist in the air which was captured by the Sun’s rays through the trees in front of our house. What a sight. I had to stop working on my latest outside project and take some photos. All of them turned out great. We live in a great location.

New Years Eve

Trailer Park Troubadours TicketYep, we have already booked New Years Eve. We went to the Santa Cruz County Fair last week to see The Trailer Park Troubadours. What, you never heard of them. Classic songs like Livin’ in Aluminum, My Baby Whistles When She Walks, and Everything’s a Dollar. Antsy McClain leads the band and they are a blast. Their shows are upbeat. Fun is the operative word. They are playing New Year’s at the Rio Theater. It is a costume show. Go get your tickets.

America’s Cup, fast sailing.

The next America’s Cup on San Francisco Bay will be gnarly. These are some of the fastest sail boats in the world. They are AC45’s that are for the warm up races, next will be AC72’s for the Louis Vuitton Cup. The following video from Plymouth England shows boats running into each other, boats capsizing, and Captains being lost overboard. The next America’s Cup World Series is next month in San Diego. I might have to head down there.

Riding in the Bike Lane

I sure most of the people reading this are car drivers. Just so you know, us bicyclist, and yeah I also drive a vehicle, do not have to ride in the bike lane. There are no laws in the country requiring a bicyclist to ride in the bike lane. The cop in the above video was wrong. He can give you a ticket, but it will be thrown out of court. Some of the reasons not to: glass in the bike lane along with all kinds of detritus thrown out of cars by drivers and passengers, rough paving patches, drains, tree limbs and other vegetation not cut back, cars parked in the bike lane, cars parked next to the bike lane with drivers ready to open the door into the bike lane, people walking in the bike lane, and my favorite, other bicyclist riding on the wrong side of the rode in the bike lane. There are certain circumstances where riding in the bike lane makes it hard for cars to see you. In July, I was riding in the bike lane going down into Capitola, when a driver saw a parking spot and turned right into the parking space at the last second without looking and no signal (another pet peeve) and hit me. It beat me up pretty good. The driver was clearly wrong, but wanted to blame me. I no longer ride in the bike along this stretch of rode, because drivers do not pay attention. Yes, I know their are bad bicyclist out there, but remember, you are in the 4000 pound car. All you have to do is bend your ankle to apply the gas or brake, or bend your elbow slightly to turn the wheel. Please watch for us. We’re your friends and relatives.

Indian Summer

Well now that the tourist are gone, we get our great Summer weather. All Summer the mornings were gray and dripping wet with some clearing in the afternoon. Now, two days in a row of morning sunshine. Indian Summer must be here. I took this picture at the beginning of my 32 mile bike ride yesterday. I rode along the coast up past Natural Bridges and back. It doesn’t get much more picturesque. Now with the dryer weather I can start some new outside projects. Sophia is already barking at the deer. I’m gonna get outside and put some Steely Dan on.Concrete Ship in Aptos

The Bucks are on the loose

Buck in the Santa Cruz MountainsIt’s that time of year. Indian Summer is here. The deer are all around the house. This buck was following four does. Sophia turns into Cujo whenever she sees the deer. Which is at least two to three times a day. Usually it is a younger group, but this morning it was the older ones out. The buck was curling his upper lip, and waggling his tongue behind the females.

Capitola Art and Wine Festival

We spent Saturday  in Capitola at the Art and Wine Festival. A high school friend from Chowchilla was visiting. Brad and Kristi had a good time shopping the crafts and sampling the wines. My favorite wine was from Hunter Hill Winery. It was a 2007 Cabernet Savignon. Very nice. Rich, deep flavored, and chocolaty. I meant to take a lot of pictures, but took only one. Someone had placed these big, blue, granny underwear in the middle of the Esplanade in front Bay Bar & Grill. Everyone was walking around them. I didn’t notice anyone that appeared to be missing any as we walked around. I was checking. They do  appear to be clean.Blue Grandma Underwear

Phil’s Fish Market

Fish on ice at Phil's Fish MarketElaine and I went to Phil’s Fish Market yesterday afternoon. Late lunch, early dinner. Lately when we go, we sit at the bar, you actually get served there by the bartender. If you sit at the tables, it is cafeteria style, though the food is brought to your table. I always have the oysters, one or two dozen. The pacific oysters are good sized and have a great ocean taste. This picture shows some of the whole fish that is available at Phil’s. Phil’s has another 3 years on their lease. The aquarium wants to tear down the building and install more research facilities on the island in Moss Landing. Let’s hope they work out a deal to keep Phil’s out there somewhere. We used to go there when Phil’s was next door in a little funky building much smaller than it is now. You were given plastic utensils and plastic glasses. We would take our picnic basket with real silverware and wine glasses. The atmosphere has sure changed, but the food is good, reasonably priced, and in a great location. Click Phil’s link above to check the weather, but don’t let the fog stop you from enjoying the food.

Big waves in Tahiti

The storm from Antarctica that is now hitting Santa Cruz, visited Tahiti on its way here. The Billabong Pro Tahiti was going on, and a tow in session started. Warning, some crunching involved in some of these rides.

Check out Billabong’s site for great coverage of the event.

Android App

Sophia on the deck taking a nap.

I wanted to see how easy it was to set updating and blogging using your phone. I downloaded the free android app. It took about five minutes to configure. You can also add photos, etc. Here is Sophia taking a nap on the back deck. The picture and post were sent from my phone, and I edited the post using the computer.
